Maldon and Dengie CAMRA is one
of the smallest branches of the national campaign group, The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). Small we might be, but we pack
a big punch.
We hold a beer and cider festival in Maldon each year showcasing the best of British ales. A nominal £1.00 charge is made to non-CAMRA members to defray costs. In early October each year we also run a beer and cider festival in South Woodham Ferrers.
We are the home of four noted micro- breweries - Crouch Vale, Maldon Brewing Co. Ltd., Mighty Oak and Wibblers. Our four breweries have won multiple awards & further details of these can be found under our “Breweries” section.
In 2016, one of our pubs was Essex CAMRA Pub of the Year (the Compasses in Great Totham). Two of our 90 pubs have in the past won the top
accolade of National CAMRA pub of the year,
most recently the Swan, Little Totham which won
the award twice in
2002 and 2005.
Nearly every pub in
our area sells real ale.
Our aim is to maintain & indeed improve this enviable position by encouraging breweries to supply good ale, for landlords to keep it and sell it that way & pub goers to make good use of their local and drink fine ale.
Many of our branch's pubs have a totally unspoilt feel to them, thanks in part to being owned by the family firm of Gray
& Sons (Chelmsford) Ltd, whose pubs
are as you remember them from years gone by. Many are simply
furnished but offer real
ale from an enormous
choice of breweries
from around the UK.
Details of all pubs in our area are published in our free Pub & Beer guide which is reprinted on a regular basis.
We also have a vibrant social scene, with a variety of events planned throughout the year. See the "Events Diary" for more details.
